Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is used in therapy to address muscle atrophy and weakness.  Many patients are unable to maximally contract injured or weak muscles after paralysis, surgery, traumatic injury, or even disuse due to weakness or pain.  If a dog is unwilling or unable to contract a muscle, NMES is used to facilitate that muscle contraction.  It aids in building muscle strength, muscle reeducation, decreasing pain and swelling, and reducing muscle spasm.
